Holidays to Sofia

Introduction

Many travellers only spend a day or two in Sofia before heading out to the ski resorts or seaside. However, Sofia has much to offer travellers who take the time to explore the capital city of Bulgaria. Here there is an interesting mix of ancient ruins, religious monuments, museums, parks, art galleries, and trendy restaurants and bars. The city is one of Europe’s up and coming modern metropolises, with much to see and do for travellers who want to go slightly off the beaten path.

What to do in Sofia

One of the most appealing things about Sofia for travellers is the sheer volume of historic ruins and monuments that can be found throughout the city. One such monument that is not to be missed on a holiday to Sofia is the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (pictured right). This Eastern Orthodox church was built in the early 1900s, and it features luxurious design elements such as a gold-plated dome, and alabaster and Italian marble interior design elements. This massive church is located next to the St. Sofia church, from which the city takes its name.

Sofia also offers a wide range of excellent dining options. Cafe culture is huge here, so there are plenty of inviting coffee shops to enjoy an espresso or tea and people watch from a terrace. In addition, there are trendy and chic restaurants, eating establishments serving international cuisine, and traditional Bulgarian taverns with hearty regional dishes. Moreover, there are plenty of friendly pubs, glitzy nightclubs, and thumping discos where DJs play top dance hits until dawn.

Besides interesting historical sites and exciting dining and nightlife options, Sofia also offers many lovely green areas. The city is dotted with pleasant green parks with picturesque trees, flowers, and water features. In addition, the city sits at the foot of Mount Vitosha, where visitors on a holiday to Sofia can go skiing, snowboarding, hiking, wildlife spotting, or soak in the mineral springs at the foothills of this dramatic mountain.
