Holidays to Pisa

Introduction

Pisa may be known for its famous leaning tower, but this historic city offers much more for travellers to see and do. Here you can find medieval churches and palaces, fantastic museums, and tempting cafes, bars and restaurants. This is a great destination for those who want to bone up on their Italian history and gorge yourself on delicious Italian cuisine.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Pisa

The leaning tower of Pisa (pictured) is the main attraction for visitors on a holiday to Pisa. This world-famous landmark has an incredibly intriguing history. Work on the tower began in 1173, and soon after, the soft ground under the foundation began to give way. Over the years, wars halted construction, which gave time for the land to settle. Despite the odd angle of the building, construction on the tower continued, and today, visitors can climb to the top of the tower for views over the cathedral and baptistery below.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

It would be a shame to travel Pisa and not visit some of the captivating museums here. The cathedral beside the leaning tower has a great collection of historic artwork, some of which was seized from far away lands. The Museo di San Matteo is home to beautiful Renaissance paintings and sculptures. And if science is your thing, you won’t want to miss a trip to the Museo Nazionale Degli Strumenti per il Calcolo, which showcases scientific instruments, including a compass that was used by Galileo himself.

Pisa is also a great city to eat out, as there are many dining and drinking venues to suit any taste and budget. Here you can find tasty pizzas and pastas at rustic trattorias, grilled steak and fresh seafood at sophisticated fine dining restaurants, and heavenly pastries and cakes at cosy cafes. One of the best things to do in the evenings in Pisa is a grab a seat at a riverside bar and enjoy a bottle of wine or a cold beer, while watching the crowds go by.
