Holidays to Venice

Introduction

There is no place in the world quite like Venice. The city rests on over 100 islands in the Venice lagoon, and is connected by a series of picturesque canals and bridges. This is the place to be if you want to take in incredible art and architecture, historic palaces and museums, fabulous markets and artisan workshops, and world class cuisine.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Venice

One of the most enjoyable activities on a trip to Venice is taking a gondola ride through the winding canals, passing impressive buildings in a range of architectural styles including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque with Byzantine and Arabic influences. Stop at the onion domes and marble columns of St. Mark’s Basilica, the grand Doge’s Palace on the waterfront, and the 16th century Rialto Bridge. You can also stroll through the streets to discover hidden churches, residences, and squares down the winding alleyways.

Grand Canal in Venice Holidays

For an interesting day trip, head to some of the other islands in the lagoon. Murano is famous for its glass blowers who create incredible glass sculptures in swirling colours and intriguing shapes. Here you can see the masters at work in the many glass blowing studios that are open to the public. Burano is also a lovely place to spend some time for its colourful rainbow-hued buildings, lovely bridges, and small shops selling intricate lace products.

Although Venice is not known as a party town, it does not mean there is nothing to do once the sun goes down. During the evenings, visitors on a holiday to Venice can enjoy captivating operas, live classical music concerts, contemporary art exhibitions, and divine food at one of the many pubs and restaurants in the city squares. Start the evening with a savoury dish of marinated eels, followed by a bowl of ink-blackened cuttlefish risotto and sweet almond cake, and rub elbows with the locals over a glass of bubbly Prosecco.
