Holidays to Transylvania

Introduction

When most people think of Transylvania, they think of Dracula, vampires, and spooky old castles. While this large region in central Romania certainly does boast incredible castles, one of which was the setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the region has so much more to offer those on a holiday to Transylvania. Here you can find some of Europe’s most stunning medieval castles, fortified churches, ancient fortresses, and beautiful landscapes.

What to See in Transylvania

It would be a shame to come to Transylvania and not visit one of the many incredible castles and ancient buildings in the region. Many people visit Bran Castle in Brasov (Pictured right), as this was the setting for the legendary Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Although there is no proof that the real Dracula ever lived here, it is a scenic place to visit nonetheless. Peles Castle is another interesting sight as it looks like it came straight out of the pages of a fairy tale book. Majestic turrets with spires rise out of the lush green landscape, wooden ceiling beams look down on Greek stonework, and Italian, French, and Moorish inspired designs, and elegant statues dot the courtyards outside. The Black Church in Brasov is a fine example of Gothic architecture in Romania, and it dates back to the 15th century. Here visitors can also see weekly concerts where organ players use the impressive 4,000 pipe organ in the cathedral.

Transylvania is also a great destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors, as there are plenty of mountains and forests in the region to explore. Avid skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes in ski resorts such as Predeal and Poiana Brasov, hikers can wind their way through the pine forests and underground caves in Piatra Craiului National Park, and rock climbers can scale the limestone cliffs of Apuseni. Outdoor enthusiasts will find no end to the exciting activities in both summer and winter in Transylvania.
