Holidays to Rhonda

Introduction

What do you get when you combine sun-bleached houses perched precariously on top of a massive gorge, centuries of settlement by the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, and Christians, the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain, and a favourite haunt of renowned writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles? The answer is simple: Ronda, one of the most impressive cities in all of Spain and possibly Europe. For history buffs, Ronda is a holiday destination not to be missed.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Ronda

It is hard to know where to begin on a holiday to Ronda, but what many travellers tackle first are the impressive bridges that span the 100-metre tall walls of the canyon that splits the city of Ronda in half. These historic bridges are spectacular for their sheer height and the views that they offer to the gorge below and the gleaming white buildings on the either side, which look as though they are about to spill into the gorge at any given moment.

Rhonda Holidays

Walking around Ronda’s La Ciudad, or the old Muslim town, is like strolling through an open-air museum. The small, winding streets here open up into small squares surrounded by medieval houses, Islamic palaces, and a massive Gothic cathedral. To experience an important piece of Spanish history and culture, visit the Plaza de Toros, which is Spain’s oldest bullring. There is a small museum on site dedicated to this uniquely Spanish sport.

Just outside the city is the fascinating Cueva de la Pileta, which features Paleolithic cave paintings that are estimated to be more than 25,000 years old. A local farmer discovered the cave in 1905, and today his ancestors offer guided tours that take you past the original drawings of goats, bison, fish, and horses. This is an incredible opportunity to experience some of Spain’s prehistoric past.
