Holidays to Barcelona

Introduction

Barcelona is one of the most intriguing cities in Spain for its cosmopolitan make-up, its incredible history, art, and architecture, and its ideal location on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors on holiday to Barcelona can tour some of the world’s most astonishing architecture, eat mouth-watering creations of fresh seafood, cured meats, artisan cheese, and decadent wines, and bask in the sun on one of the city’s seven golden beaches. For a fascinating city break, Barcelona is an excellent choice.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Barcelona

You cannot visit Barcelona without being exposed to the captivating works of Antoni Gaudi. This creative genius spent much of the late 19th and early 20th century constructing mind-blowing churches, parks, and residential structures around the city. The Sagrada Familia church is the iconic symbol of the city, and Gaudi’s most ambitious work, with towering Gothic spires, intricately carved human figures on the exterior, and an interior that was meant to resemble the natural arches of a forest.

For a glimpse back in time, the Barri Gotic is not to be missed. This is the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, and it features fabulous medieval churches, palaces, and bridges, as well as Roman ruins, the old Jewish ghetto, and the Museo Picasso, which contains more than 3,500 artworks by Spain’s very own Pablo Picasso. The narrow streets and pleasant, shady squares of this district make it a great place to spend an afternoon.

Food lovers rave about Barcelona’s dining scene, as this is the best place in the country to get authentic Catalan food such as fresh tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil on crusty bread, seafood dishes, Iberic ham, and succulent grilled meats. Although not traditionally from the Catalan region, tapas bars are on practically every corner in Barcelona, and are a great way to sample Spanish cuisine with a glass or two of tasty Cava or fruity red wine.
