Holidays to Frigiliana

Introduction

Some of the most iconic images of Spain are the traditional whitewashed villages splayed across the sides of mountains, with historical buildings and narrow laneways with small shops, cafes, and restaurants lining the streets. Frigiliana is one of the most attractive whitewashed towns, as it offers fascinating history, incredible architecture, and fantastic food to those who visit here. The small town is just seven kilometres from the seaside resort of Nerja, and is a great day trip for those who want to see and experience a taste of old Spain.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Frigiliana

The amazing architecture is one of the main draws for travellers on a holiday to Frigiliana. The town features a mix of Mudejar buildings and narrow cobblestone streets that wind their way up the hills and around the buildings, which were built by the Moors between the 6th and 14th centuries. In addition, there is a picturesque 17th century church with a bell tower, the remains of the medieval fort at the top of a hill above the town, and Roman ruins in and around the town.

Frigiliana holidays

To truly understand the history of the town, it is worth stopping to look at some of the glass and ceramic tile mosaics that grace the walls of some of the streets and squares in the town. The mosaics tell the story of how the Moors rebelled in the area, and how they were later expelled from Spain during the Reconquista period. After 1569, Spanish Christians replaced the Moors in Frigiliana.

Dining is a treat in Frigiliana, as there are many enticing restaurants and cafes serving delicious Andalusian fare here. Tasty tapas are abundant, as are fresh seafood dishes, sweet pastries, and fruity Spanish wines. Many dining establishments have lovely terraces that offer incredible views over the town of Nerja and beyond to the Mediterranean Sea. A cafe or restaurant terrace is the ideal place to stop for a rest after climbing the steep stairs and hilly streets of Frigiliana.
