Holidays to Mahdia

Introduction

The pretty seaside city of Mahdia is the perfect holiday destination for those looking for spectacular beaches and ancient history. Here you can spend your days relaxing on the unspoilt white sands, touring impressive historical monuments, and dining on delicious seafood, straight from the fishermen’s nets. Let your stresses melt away in the sunshine and warm sea breezes of this scenic and seductive Tunisian city.

What to see and do on a Holiday to Mahdia

Most people on a holiday to Mahdia stay in one of the lovely hotels that enjoy prime locations along the sands here. The long stretch of white sand here is fine and soft and the waters are shallow and calm, making this a fun playground for young children and snorkellers. Scuba diving is also very popular here, as there are a number of dive sites offshore that feature shipwrecks from the Second World War and schools of multi-coloured fish.

Fishing at Sunset in Mahdia

If it’s history you are after, Mahdia will not disappoint. Visit the Central Mosque, built in the 10th century, and an impressive structure for its stylised Moorish arches. The Bordj el Kebir is another striking monument, as this large square fortress sits on a hill along the waterfront and offers incredible views over the harbour and the city. Even a shopping trip to the stalls in the medina is a reminder of the past, as you enter the cobbled streets of the medina through a soaring 15th century gate.

Besides tourism, Mahdia depends heavily on the fishing industry. This means that travellers can find incredibly fresh seafood in the restaurants in and around the port. Try local delicacies such as tasty sardines, grilled swordfish, and pan-fried dorado. For some sweet treats, head to one of the inviting cafes in the main square, where you can order a rich Turkish coffee and flaky French pastries as you sit on a terrace and watch the world go by.
